Leadership Is the Hardest Job I Never Want

Please, don’t give me a promotion.

Admittedly, I’m the exact reason I never want to be a leader or climb into management. I’m not interested in guiding a team or being responsible for anyone’s “career progression”. As a millennial who has only ever taken whatever paltry position the job market had to offer, I’m not even sure what that means.

But seriously, I’m a terrible employee and a weak link in what my boss calls our “work family”.

Most mornings, I’m begrudgingly woken by my alarm which I snooze no less than what feels like a bajillion times. When I eventually find the willpower to get out of my warm and cozy bed, the first thing I do is boot up my company-provided brick and check to see if my manager is online. If she isn’t, I’ll usually go back to bed for another half an hour.

Otherwise, I check for urgent messages. If something is pressing, I make a mental note to do it eventually… probably sometime before the end of the day, definitely(?) before the end of the week. Anything that doesn’t contain urgent language like, “ASAP” “EOD” “before noon” “NOW” “yester-year” is basically optional.

A critical part of my morning routine is turning my laptop’s volume to 100% so that I can hear any notifications, calls, or emails that come through while…
